Professor Atifur Rahman is a senior interventional cardiologist and healthcare leader with more than two decades of experience in clinical medicine, research, and education. As Clinical Director of Specialist Medical Services at Gold Coast Health, he oversees a wide-ranging portfolio encompassing cardiology, neurology, renal medicine, forensic medicine, and neurodiagnostics — driving service excellence and innovation across the region.

He began his medical journey as a trainee registrar at Gold Coast Hospital in 2000 and later worked at Mater Hospital. In 2002, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) while serving at the Royal Brisbane Hospital — a milestone that marked the beginning of his long and distinguished career in cardiology.

In 2006, Professor Rahman joined Gold Coast University Hospital as an interventional cardiologist, where he played a pivotal role in establishing one of Queensland’s earliest 24-hour primary angioplasty programs for acute myocardial infarction — notably implemented without onsite cardiothoracic surgical backup. His leadership has since influenced major clinical governance frameworks, mortality review processes, and statewide cardiac outcomes initiatives. He has served on the Queensland Cardiac Outcomes Registry and the Queensland Cardiac Clinical Network, contributing to system-wide quality improvement and data-driven practice.

A passionate educator, Professor Rahman has been deeply engaged with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as a national examiner, accreditor, and Director of Advanced Training, mentoring countless physicians throughout their professional development. At Griffith and Bond Universities, he teaches and supervises medical students and registrars, combining academic rigor with compassion and real-world insight. He currently holds appointments as Professor, Griffith University School of Medicine, and Honorary Adjunct Professor, Bond University.

An accomplished researcher and author, Professor Rahman has published more than sixty peer-reviewed papers and the widely acclaimed textbook Problem-Based Cardiology Cases (Elsevier, 2020). This publication, distributed globally by Elsevier, is frequently used by medical professionals and students for evidence-based learning. The electronic version is also available through ClinicalKey Physician and accessible to Queensland Health staff and medical students via the Clinical Knowledge Network (CKN). His ongoing involvement in major international cardiology trials at Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University reflects his enduring commitment to advancing cardiovascular science.

Widely recognised for his contributions to patient care and medical education, Professor Rahman has been featured in Channel 7 Gold Coast Medical, Channel 9 EXTRA, and the Gold Coast Bulletin, and was nominated for Gold Coast Citizen of the Year. His work continues to embody innovation, integrity, and humanity in the practice of medicine.

Dr Nasir obtained his medical degree in 1991 from Baghdad University, and has since trained extensively in many different countries. Dr Nasir completed his medical training in 2003 in the UK.

He moved to Australia in 2007, where he trained in Cardiology at the Gold Coast Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. In 2013 Dr Nasir joined the John Flynn Cardiology group.

Dr Nasir’s special interests include coronary artery disease, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, heart valve problems, heart imaging and heart devices.

After graduating from his medical studies, Dr Jadeer completed a Bachelor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the university of Canberra. He completed his advanced training in cardiology at the Canberra Hospital between 2013 and 2014 and in Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand in 2015. He has worked at the Prince Charles Hospital as a cardiology fellow, specialising in heart failure.

Dr Jadeer’s main interests are in heart failure and echocardiography, including trans oesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography. His other interests include general cardiology, hypertension and preventive cardiology.

He was nominated as “Registrar of the Year” in ACT health in 2013 and in 2014. He has also received the Australian National University teaching recognition award five times. He speaks English, Farsi, Hindi, Pashtu and basic Russian.

Dr Richa is an Endocrinologist. She completed her basic physician training at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, New South Wales. She has since worked in Darwin, Cairns and completed her training at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

She currently practices at Gold Coast University hospital on a regular basis, as well as the Mater Hospital in Brisbane on a casual basis. Dr Richa also lectures at Griffith University, specialising in the field of hormones.

Her experience and areas of interest include disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, calcium and bone, including osteoporosis and adrenal disorders. She also has extensive experience in all kinds of diabetes management, including Type 1, Type 2 , Gestational diabetes, MODY and insulin pump management.

Dr. Fahid Hashem has joined our Practice.

Dr Hashem has almost a decade of experience in Endocrinology and General Medicine working in the busy public system and is involved in medical training and research.

His clinical expertise is in complex diabetes, obesity related metabolic disease, thyroid and other endocrine conditions. We are thrilled to have him on board.

Dr Simon Kang is an Interventional and General Cardiologist, who became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2019.

He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2010 and went onto complete his cardiology training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital. He undertook two years of fellowship in Perth at the Royal Perth Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital specialising in coronary intervention. He was awarded the prestigious Chien Foundation Scholarship and undertook a 12-month fellowship at the National Heart Centre of Singapore. Dr Kang has trained extensively in complex coronary intervention, treating patients with complex bifurcation disease, left main coronary intervention, bypass graft disease and chronic total occlusion CTO using advanced interventional techniques such as rotational/orbital atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy and invasive coronary imaging such as Intravascular Ultrasound and Optical Coherence Tomography.

Dr Kang has special interest in complex, high-risk coronary intervention including CTO intervention as well as coronary physiology, diagnosis and management of both acute and stable coronary artery disease.

He is also a Staff Specialist Cardiologist of Gold Coast University Hospital and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is actively involved in teaching junior doctors and medical students.
